10 Stars Who Flopped At Man Utd

Being one of the richest clubs in the world, Manchester United have a history of splurging big money on players they want, but this does not always work out. Featuring names such as Angel Di Maria and the club's current highest-paid player, here are 10 stars who failed to cut it at the Red Devils.

When he signed from Serie A side Lazio in 2001, the hype around Juan Sebastian Veron at Old Trafford was huge. The Argentine seemed the perfect fit for Sir Alex Ferguson's side as he had all the makings of a top holding midfielder, but lasted just two seasons at the club.

Even years after his departure, Veron has had many of his former teammates praise his talent, with current interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently saying he was one of the best players he ever took to the field with.

Despite his ability, many believed the former Argentina international simply battled to adapt to the English game. Veron joined Chelsea in 2003, but spent just a year with the Blues before going out on loan to Inter Milan.

Another South American player on the list who struggled to make the grade at United is Diego Forlan, whose best years arguably began once he left the club. The Uruguayan was signed from Independiente in 2002, and scored just 17 goals in 98 appearances.

Forlan, to the surprise of many United fans, went on to become one of Europe's deadliest marksmen at Villarreal and then Atletico Madrid in the years that followed, sharing the European Golden Shoe award in both the 2004/05 and 2008/09 seasons.

Players such as Anderson and Bebe also feature in our gallery, as does 2014 signings Radamel Falcao (albeit on an expensive loan deal) and Angel Di Maria.

Current United star Alexis Sanchez is considered by many to be a failed signing, with his year and three months at the club so far having been underwhelming. The Chilean joined from Arsenal in January 2018, and has since managed just five goals for the club.
