10 Stars Who Famously Went On Strike

With Leicester City's African superstar Riyad Mahrez having gone on strike over the past few weeks, here are 10 other players who did similar in their career.

Click through the gallery above to see 10 footballers who decided to go on strike, according to the Daily Mirror.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Algerian has opted to stay away from training for three weeks as he is angry with the Foxes over his failed move to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Mahrez has missed the club's past two matches already, and it has been confirmed by manager Claude Puel that the winger will not feature against Manchester City this weekend, although he apparently returned to training today.

England International Raheem Sterling did something similar back in 2015 when he said that he was too ill to travel with Merseyside club Liverpool on their pre-season tour of Asia. The Englishman, who wanted to move to the Citizens at the time, saw the Reds turn down numerous bids for him before he took matters into his own hands.

In 2001, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes decided to protest being left out of Sir Alex Ferguson's side for a 3-1 loss at Liverpool, with the midfielder refusing to play in a League Cup tie at Arsenal later that week. The Old Trafford legend did admit later on in his career that he was lucky not to be sold by Ferguson.

Diego Costa is another player who recently went on strike, but this was down to a strained relationship with his former boss Antonio Conte at Chelsea. The Spain international was deemed surplus to requirements by the Italian, and when that news broke, he refused to return to the club.

Outfield Players Who Became Goalkeepers For A Day

Others who went on strike, according to the Daily Mirror, are Dimitri Payet, George Best, Clint Dempsey, Dimitar Berbatov, Sebastien Squillaci, Carlos Tevez and Pierre van Hooijdonk.
