According to Manchester Evening News, Germany international Jerome Boateng may be on Mourinho's radar following Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge's recent admission that the player wants to leave the club.
Mourinho could see Boateng as a perfect defensive target due to his ability and experience, although he is not the only centre-back who has been linked with United.
Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld could also find himself at Old Trafford next season, although rumours that he could leave the London club have seemingly quietened down.
Two left-backs, Juventus' Alex Sandro and Spurs' Danny Rose, have also been heavily linked with the Red Devils, with Luke Shaw having failed to cement a place in United's first team last season, as did Daley Blind.
Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who will represent Serbia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, has also been closely watched by United, as has Roma's Radja Nainggolan, who was surprisingly left out of Belgium's squad for the tournament.
Further up the field, Mourinho has been linked with the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Antoine Griezmann, although the Frenchman seems likely to either remain at Atletico Madrid or move to FC Barcelona.
Real Madrid duo Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo have also been spoken about as potential targets, although it is, of course, unlikely both would join the Red Devils.
While Ronaldo is said to be unhappy with his contract situation at Los Blancos, the Welshman has also complained about a lack of playing time. New Real manager Julen Lopetegui also once admitted to not being a fan of the player.
