The next standout game in our new Dates to Remember feature is the Group G clash between Germany and Portugal.
Date: 16 June
Time: 21:00 (SA time)
Stadium: Arena Fonte Nova
Germany and Portugal have met at three of the last four international tournaments, and Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates won’t like to remember these games at all.
Portugal lost 3-1 to Germany in the 2006 World Cup third-place playoff thanks to a Bastian Schweinsteiger double.
Two years later, the two sides met at the quarter-final of the 2008 EURO, with Germany advancing 3-2.
They met again at the 2012 EURO with Germany winning 1-0, leaving Ronaldo goalless against Germany in three competitive meetings.
The last Portuguese victory came at the 2000 EURO, when Portugal beat a toothless German team 3-0 in the group stages.
Both sides have met 17 times overall, with Germany winning nine games, Portugal collecting only three victories and five games drawn.
While Germany topped their qualification group with nine victories and one draw, Portugal finished their group second behind Russia and had to beat Sweden 4-2 on aggregate to qualify for the Brazil World Cup.
Everybody will look at Cristiano Ronaldo and whether the superstar can finally score his first goal against the Germans.
Make sure to mark this date in your calendar as the game might determine success or failure for both sides in Brazil.
