Welbeck Fires Arsenal Into League Cup Semi-Finals
English Carabao Cup Report: Arsenal v West Ham United, 19 December 2017
Carabao Cup Quarterfinal
Result: Arsenal 1-0 West Ham United
Date: 19 December 2017
Venue: Emirates Stadium
A single goal from Danny Welbeck handed Arsenal a slender 1-0 win over West Ham United in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
It was a slow start to the game by both teams with chances on goal few and far between.
Slowly Arsenal started to control the flow of the game, but their decision making in front of goal was poor.
The first real scoring chance only came in the 39th minute when Theo Walcott met a cross from Sead Kolasinac, but his header went inches wide of the West Ham goal.
Three minutes later Arsenal did take the lead when Mathieu Debuchy headed a through ball for Danny Welbeck who met it with a clinical finish to make it 1-0, a lead the Gunners took into the half time break.
Similar to the start of the game, the start of the first half saw both sides squandering possession in the final third.
The first decent attempt of the second stanza came in the 64th minute courtesy of a 24-yard free-kick from West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell, but he curled his effort just wide of the target.
That was about as exciting as the second half got with both sides unimaginative in attack as Arsenal ran out 1-0 winners on the night to progress into the semifinals of the cup competition.
