English League Cup
Result: Bristol City 2-3 Manchester City (3-5 agg.)
Date: 23 January 2018
Venue: Ashton Gate
Manchester City booked their spot in the Carabao Cup final with a 3-2 win over a valiant Bristol City at Ashton Gate, clinching the tie 5-3 on aggregate.
As expected, Manchester City went on the attack early on. The relentless pressure nearly paid off in the 13th minute, when Sergio Agüero struck the crossbar.
In the 28th minute, Luke Steele was forced into action by David Silva, who had been played in by Leroy Sané. The keeper did well to stop the Spaniard’s low shot, tipping it away from Agüero, who could easily have tapped in on the rebound.
A defensive lapse saw Manchester City draw first blood in the 43rd minute. Hördur Magnússon was dispossessed in a dangerous area after neglecting to clear the ball. Bernardo Silva then played it to Leroy Sané, leaving him to slot home the opener.
The visitors picked up where they left off after the half-time break and Agüero fired in their second goal of the night in the 49th minute after being set up by a clever Kevin de Bruyne pass.
Bristol City scored a consolation goal in the 64th minute, when Marlon Pack headed home after meeting a cross from Jamie Paterson, executing his finish to perfection.
The hosts’ persistence gave them one more goal deep in stoppage time. Bobby Reid’s headed pass set up Aden Flint for the simplest of finishes to draw the teams level on the night.
However, it was too late for them to come back and they succumbed to the Premier League leaders, who hit right back with a de Bruyne strike to seal the game. Manchester City will either face Arsenal or Chelsea in the final at Wembley.
