De Gea was once the Premier League's outstanding goalkeeper, but a dip in form over the past two seasons has resulted in the Spain international being criticised from a number of quarters.
The 28-year-old's downturn in form has coincided with interest from LaLiga giants Real Madrid, and De Gea is reportedly willing to turn down a massive deal worth €350 000 (R5.6 million) a week in order to join Los Blancos as a free agent next season.
United are now believed to be preparing for that eventuality and, according to talkSPORT, have identified Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak as the ideal replacement.
The Red Devils have had Oblak on their radar for some time and can reportedly sign the Slovenian shot-stopper by activating his €120 million (R1.9 billion) release clause.

Should United proceed with the deal, the 26-year-old would become the most expensive goalkeeper of all time, breaking the record amount of €80 million (R1.2 billion) Chelsea paid to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga last season.
