Anthony Martial had given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side a first-half lead before Portugal international Ruben Neves equalised after the break. United could have won the match late on but Paul Pogba saw his penalty saved by Rui Patricio.
The result will come as a disappointment for the 20-time league champions, who are hoping to improve on last season's sixth-place finish, but they can draw some positives after Martial reached a unique milestone.
The Frenchman's goal on the night was the 50th he has netted for United since arriving at Old Trafford in 2015, and saw him become only the 53rd player in the club's history to reach the milestone.
The 23-year-old reached the magical number on his 176th appearance for the club, and is only the second Frenchman ever to achieve the tally for United after Eric Cantona, who netted 79 times during his time in Manchester.
