City's Community Shield victory over Liverpool on Sunday was marred by a potentially serious injury to one of the club's star players.
Leroy Sane had to be substituted during the win over the Reds after suffering what was initially thought to be a twisted knee.
However, according to The Athletic, the Citizens now fear that the German star has suffered a more serious injury, and suspect he may have sustained damage to his anterior cruciate ligament.
Sane has been sent for scans on his knee, and would likely need to undergo surgery if ligament damage is revealed.
The injury comes as a blow to the 23-year-old, who was reportedly hoping to complete a move to Bayern Munich before the transfer window closes.
The Bavarians have courted Sane throughout the window, and were reportedly set an asking price of €150 million (R2.5 billion) for the former Schalke winger earlier in the month.
That deal now appears to be in tatters as Bayern are unlikely to spend big on a player who could miss the remainder of the season, although it remains possible that City are exaggerating the seriousness of his injury in order to drive off interest.

The Germany international joined the Citizens from Schalke in 2016, and has scored 39 goals in 134 appearances for the club since.
