Result: Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1 Manchester United
Date: 19 August 2019
Venue: Molineux Stadium
Paul Pogba missed a second-half penalty as Manchester United dropped their first points of the season away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only made one change from the side that thrashed Chelsea, with Daniel James making his full debut in place of Andreas Pereira who dropped to the bench.
The Red Devils took control from the onset as Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Jesse Lingard saw a lot of the ball, although chances were hard to come by in the final third.
United were eventually rewarded for their dominance on 27 minutes as a well-worked passing move ended with Anthony Martial rifling a left-footed effort past Rui Patricio from 10-yards out.
Wolves, meanwhile, struggled to get their passing game going and often had to carve out chances on the counter, although United's David de Gea was barely tested in the opening 45 minutes.
Ten minutes into the second half, the hosts managed to restore parity as Jonny's cross found Ruben Neves who took a touch before curling one in off the crossbar from 20-yards out.
The Red Devils were afforded a chance to restore their lead on 67 minutes when Paul Pogba was brought down. The Frenchman stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by Patricio.
With 10 minutes to play, Solskjaer opted for a switch as Lingard made way for Juan Mata as the away side looked to snatch a late winner.
The Red Devils pushed for a winner in the closing stages but they were unable to carve out another clear-cut opening as the spoils were shared on the night.
