Late VAR Drama Denies Man City Three Points

English Premier League

Result: Manchester City 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Date: 17 August 2019

Venue: Etihad

The Video Assistant Referee( VAR) grabbed the headlines at the Etihad as Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur played to an entertaining 2-2 draw on Saturday evening.

Sergio Aguero returned to the Man City line up in place of Gabriel Jesus while Mauricio Potchettino restored Christian Eriksen to Spurs midfield.

After a relatively quiet opening, the game burst in to life on 20 minutes. Kevin de Bruyne whipped a fine ball into the box, where Raheem Sterling was on hand to head home his fourth goal of the season.

City's joy was short-lived as Spurs restored parity two minutes later, with Erik Lamela expertly placing the ball into the bottom corner from around 20-yards out.

The tops-turvy half continued when Pep Guardiola's side re-took the lead with 10 minutes remaining in the half as De Bruyne did well to pick out Sergio Aguero, who clipped the ball beyond Hugo Lloris.

With Spurs struggling to make an in-roads, Lucas Moura made his way onto the pitch for Harry Winks and his impact was immediate as he nodded home a cross from Lamela to level matters in the 56th minute.

The game continued to be played at high pace which eventually prompted Guardiola to withdraw Aguero for the quicker Jesus, who went close to scoring three minutes after his arrival.

With his final throw of the dice, Guardiola introduced Riyad Mahrez for the in-effective Bernardo Silva as the Citizens pushed for a winner in the final 10 minutes.

City thought they had struck the winning goal in second-half stoppage when Jesus rifled home but after a review from VAR, the strike was ruled out after a handball in the build-up and the encounter finished 2-2.
