Reds' 61-Game Unbeaten Home Record Key To EPL Defence

Liverpool's remarkable home record in the Premier League, which currently stands at 61 games without defeat, will be key to the club defending its crown this season.

In ordinary, non-COVID-19 affected times, home ground advantage is a factor that counts in favour of most, if not all, teams, but it is something that has taken on mythical proportions during Jurgen Klopp's tenure on Merseyside.

The reigning champions lost only three matches across the entire 2019/20 Premier League campaign, and were unbeaten in all home ties, with an uncharacteristic performance during a 1-1 draw against Burnley in July proving to be the only blip on an otherwise perfect campaign at Anfield.

The Reds recorded 55 points out a of possible 57 at their hallowed turf last season, which alone would have been enough to secure the club a top 10 finish in the league standings.

That form has continued into the new campaign, which means the Reds have not suffered a single top-flight defeat at the vaunted arena since 23 April 2017, when the 19-time league champions succumbed to a surprise 2-1 loss at the hands of Crystal Palace.

Liverpool's unbeaten run now stands at 61 consecutive matches, consisting of 50 wins and 11 draws, making Anfield one of the most inhospitable venues to visit for rival teams. However, the 54 000-seater stadium will have a different feel to it for at least part of the season as fans across England are still prohibited from attending matches amid the coronavirus pandemic.

With no date in place for fans to return to grounds across the country, this means Liverpool will be without their impassioned supporters and the famous Kop atmosphere that has for long been a driving force behind the club's success.

Whether that has an impact on the home advantage remains to be seen, but early suggestion is that the rampant Reds will maintain their remarkable run of form for the foreseeable future. To take a leaf out of legendary Reds manager Bill Shankly's book, Jurgen Klopp has turned Anfield into a bastion of invincibility.
