Mourinho: Why I Followed Player To Toilet

Jose Mourinho has explained why he chased one of his players down the tunnel as he ran to the toilet during Tottenham Hotspur's win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes on Tuesday, with the Lilywhites winning the penalty shootout 5-4 after Mason Mount missed his spot-kick.

Despite the game being an entertaining one, it will perhaps be more remembered for Eric Dier's run down the tunnel to use the bathroom, and Mourinho chasing him, with little more than 10 minutes left to play.

After Spurs' win, the Portuguese tactician praised Dier for playing two full matches in 48 hours, and explained that he ran after the England international to put pressure on him to return to the pitch as quickly as possible.

"We tried to organise a team with the players we had available," Mourinho told Sky Sports.

"What happened to Eric Dier is not normal, I have to praise him in a special way. It should be forbidden for a player to play two games in 48 hours at this level (after he played against Newcastle United on Sunday).

"What he did is not human to do. He had to go (when he ran off) – he had no chance! Maybe it is a normal thing when you are completely dehydrated which is the case, I had to put pressure on him to get back, but he is a great example for everybody. If the authorities don't care about players, I care.

"On the penalties I have a negative record, but I had the feeling that everything was going well. We were ready to fight, I told you. I told the players before the penalties that they were magnificent in the second half, we made Chelsea look ordinary. The team waited for the right moment.
