Robert Lewandowski bagged a goal and an assist for Bayern Munich, as the Bundesliga Champions defeated Schalke 2-0 at the Veltins-Arena on Friday evening.
Bayern's summer signing, Renato Sanches returned from injury and was handed his debut in the midfield.
Carlo Ancelotti's charges dominated the opening exchanges, but were unable to carve out any chances in the opening 20 minutes.
Bayern's first opening arrived after 25 minutes as Thomas Muller's cross found Lewandowski, who skewed his effort inches wide of the upright.
Despite the visitors' dominance, Schalke nearly took a surprising lead just before the break but Manuel Neuer rushed off his line to thwart Klaas Jan Huntelaar from close range.
The score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break at the Veltins-Arena.
With Bayern struggling to the break the deadlock, Ancelotti introduced Douglas Costa and Atruo Vidal for Fracnk Ribery and Xabi Alonso.
The Bundesliga champions eventually broke the deadlock after 81 minutes, as Javi Martinez's fine pass found Lewandowski, who slotted home with an impressive finish.
Bayern pushed for a second goal and were rewarded in stoppage time, as Lewandowski turned provider to tee up substitute Joshua Kimmich, who slotted home from close range for his first Bundesliga goal.
