Result: Bayern Munich 5-1 Wolfsburg
Date: 22 September 2015
Venue: Allianz Arena
Robert Lewandowski was in fierce form as he scored five to guide Bayern Munich to a 5-1 victory over Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena.
Pep Guardiola’s men wasted no time in showing their intent as Douglas Costa had a great effort well saved in the bottom corner as early as the 6th minute. It seemed Wolfsburg were a bit overwhelmed by the occasion as Bayern ran rings around them, Thomas Mueller coming close before Costa forced a superb save from Diego Benaglio in the 18th minute.
It was, however, the visitors that would grab the opener as Daniel Caligiuri placed an effort right into the top corner to make it 1-0 to Wolfsburg after 25 minutes of play. The hosts continued to dominate, but the final touches let them down as they failed to convert.
The hosts came out firing in the second stanza, as Robert Lewandowski slotted a fine effort into the bottom corner to draw level at 1-1 five minutes after the restart. Before Wolfsburg could settle, the Polish marksman was back to make it 2-1 only a minute later.
It was like someone had given the home side a turbo boost at the break as Lewandowski rocked up in the 54th minute to complete his hat-trick and give Bayern a 3-1 advantage. Two minutes later, the hitman was back again, and Benaglio could not find the answers for his strikes as he converted to make it 4-1 to Munich.
The home side were looking a class above their opponents, and Lewandowski could smell blood as the striker appeared in the 59th minute to score yet another fine goal, taking the score to 5-1 in favour of the defending champions.
The reigning champions continued to dominate, the visitors looked shell shocked, and Mario Gotze almost capitalized in the 67th minute but the German’s strike was well saved in the bottom corner. The hosts seemed to have taken the foot off the pedal as the match progressed and Wolfsburg failed to turn the tables as the match ended 5-1 in favour of Bayern Munich.
