Muller & Boateng Send Dortmund Crashing Out
DFB Pokal Report: Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund 20 December 2017
Result: Bayern Munich 2-1 Borussia Dortmund
Date: 20 December 2017
Venue: Allianz Arena
Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to advance to the next round of the DFB Pokal on Wednesday evening.
The Bavarians could have opened the scoring in the third minute when Arturo Vidal smashed the underside of the crossbar with a bullet header.
However, they were not lucky enough in the 12th minute when Jerome Boateng was at the right place at the right time to score from a rebound after Niklas Sule's strike had hit the crossbar, 1-0.
Thomas Muller threatened to score the second goal in the 22nd minute after turning brilliantly on the by-line, but Roman Burki made a great stop to deny the Germany international.
Dortmund manager Peter Stoger made his first substitution in the 35th minute of the match by bringing on Mahmoud Dahoud in place of Marc Bartra.
Five minutes before the break, Muller made it 2-0 with a beautiful chip over goalkeeper Burki inside the box following a through ball by Robert Lewandowski.
The Bavarians headed into the break with a two-goal cushion.
Sule rose the highest in the box to power through a header inside the box ten minutes into the second half, but Burki was well positioned to tip the effort over the bar.
Shinji Kagawa almost pulled one goal back for Dortmund in the 67th minute with well struck shot inside the box but his effort missed the target by inches.
Andriy Yarmolenko gave the visitors a lifeline in the 77th minute by heading into an empty net at the far post following a fine cross from Kagawa.
Stoger's troops threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser, but Bayern managed to hold out until the final whistle to secure the win.
