The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), a Swiss-based football statistics institute, has selected the 50 most promising talents in Europe, and included Panagiotis Retsos in their ranking.

The 19-year-old was born in Johannesburg to Greek parents but grew up in Greece, and joined Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen at the beginning of this campaign. He has made 25 appearances for Leverkusen so far this season, and made his Greece national team debut in August 2017, opting against representing South Africa.

Retsos has now been ranked in 12th position among the 50 most promising talents in Europe with a rating of four out of five stars, with CIES stating that four-star players "have a concrete possibility to spend big parts of their career in the most competitive European championships".

CIES explained their research for the 50 biggest prospects as follows:

"The CIES Football Observatory has analysed the domestic league experience cumulated during the last two years by U20 players from 22 European competitions to identify those with the best career prospects.

"Minutes played by each footballer were weighted according to the sporting level of leagues and the results achieved by employer clubs."

Retsos is one of 18 players who received a four-star rating, while 10 players were given five out of five stars.

AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma tops the ranking, followed by Toulouse shot-stopper Alban Lafont and Paris Saint-Germain wonderkid Kylian Mbappe.
