Matthaus Not Tempted By Chiefs/Pirates, But Bafana

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has revealed why he will not be joining Ernst Middendorp and Josef Zinnbauer as the next German to coach in the PSL, although he would be available for Bafana Bafana.

The man who captained Germany to the 1990 FIFA World Cup title is in the country as part of the Bundesliga Experience, which will take place at Balfour Mall in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Addressing the media at an event on Wednesday, the seven-time Bundesliga winner spoke highly of South Africa's PSL, but insisted he has no plans to coach a club in the country, with the 58-year-old attributing a lack of time and a busy schedule to his unavailability to become only the fifth German to coach in Mzansi.

"I know myself, in 365 days of the year I split them equally," Matthaus explained when asked if he had any aspirations to coach in SA.

"For 120 days, I'm working for football, 120 days I enjoy my lifestyle with my family at home, and the other 120 days I go on holiday. This is a beautiful life, I will not change it."

However, the former Bulgaria and Hungary national team coach has revealed that he would consider coaching Bafana Bafana if the job became available.

"Maybe when the national team position opens up, where you do not have a weekly game, maybe then the situation changes," he added.

"In a club, you need time to build something, that's why I seemed like a bad coach before, because I did not have time. It was killing me."

The Bundesliga ambassador went on to add that going into coaching again would take away time he wants to spend with his family.

"I have a young son, who is five years old, and I like to spend my time with my family," he explained.

Matthaus, who currently works as a Bundesliga ambassador, was promoting the Bundesliga Experience in Johannesburg. You can visit Balfour Mall on Saturday afternoon for a fest with family activities, live DJs, a legends game and the screening of Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund, which could be a decider in the German title race!
