Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga following a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen, with a former Arsenal player netting a brace.
Niko Kovac's were desperate for three points after they drew 3-3 with Fortuna Dusseldorf in a game where they led 3-1 with five minutes to go.
The Bavarians dominated the opening exchanges but had to wait until the 20th minute for the opening goal, with Serge Gnabry finding the back of the net against his former side.
Bremen managed to level matters in the 33rd minute as Max Kruse was given time and space to pick out Yuya Osako, who slotted past the on-rushing Manuel Neuer.
Bayern were dealt a blow five minutes later when Franck Ribery hobbled of with an injury. He was replaced by Kingsley Coman with just a few minutes left in the half.
However, the visitors restored their lead five minutes into the second half as Gnabry completed his brace by bundling the ball over the line.
Bremen opted for a double change for the final 25 minutes as Sebastian Langkamp and Kevin Möhwald were introduced with the hope of restoring parity.
The hosts pushed for an equaliser as the half went on and they went close in the 77th minute when a long range effort deflected off Niklas Sule and sailed inches wide.
Bremen threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser, but the were dealt a blow in second-half stoppage time as Niklas Moisander was sent off after picking up his secon yellow card.
That proved to be the final bit of action in the encounter as Bayern held on for a vital victory.
