Full Time: Mainz 0-2 Bayern Munich
Date: 3 February 2018
Venue: Opel Arena
Bayern Munich continue their march to the Bundesliga title with another comfortable 2-0 win over Mainz in a league match at the Opel Arena on Saturday.
Bayern were by far the better side from the first whistle as they dominated the possession stakes and dictated the flow of the match.
The first significant shot on goal came in the 13th minute, but Corentin Tolisso saw his long-range effort inches over the Mainz target.
For their credit the Mainz defence stood firm for the most part and stubbornly kept the Bayern attack at bay.
Mainz’s resilience, though, was finally broken in the 33rd minute when a rebound fell to Franck Ribery on the edge of the box and he dully fired the ball into the top corner of the net, 1-0.
A minute before the break Bayern doubled their lead when Corentin Tolisso slipped James Rodriguez through on goal and he made no mistake with a clinical finish from 14-yards out, 2-0.
Bayern took their foot off the pedal in the second half and allowed Mainz to come at them, but the home side’s final pass was poor in the final third.
Mainz should really have pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when Robin Quaison broke through on goal, but with just the Bayern keeper to beat he fired wide.
That was about as exciting as it got in the second half as Bayern cruised to a comfortable win as they remain 18 points clear at the top of the table.
