Werder Bremen Thump Schalke

German Bundesliga
Result: Werder Bremen 4-2 Schalke 04
Date: 8 March 2019
Venue: Veltins Arena
Werder Bremen came from a goal down to thump Schalke 4-2 at the Veltins Arena on Friday evening.
Struggling for form, Schalke nearly raced into an early lead but Matija failed to capitalise following a nicely-laid through ball.
There was no disputing nor denying Breel Embolo finding the net after pouncing on Weston McKennie’s flick on 26 minutes, 1-0.
From a free-flowing break-attack, Steven Skrzybski fired a big chance from Benjamin Stambouli’s supply wide from the left side of the area shortly after that.
On-form Bremen quickly put matters into context when Milo Rashica levelled on the half hour mark with a smart finish, 1-1.
Rashica closed-in on a double minutes before halftime, but shot horribly high and wide from Philipp Bargfrede’s assist.
Bremen went ahead shortly after the restart when Max Kruse rolled in from the spot after he had drawn a foul in the area, 2-1.
McKennie, who assisted with the opening strike, shot too high from the centre mark of the penalty area a little later.
Skrzybski became the latest figure to threaten an equaliser for the visitors, but good goalkeeping from Jiri Pavlenka stopped him following Matija Nastasic’s assist on 62 minutes.
Rashica added a third with a brilliant bottom left-corner finish following Maximilian Eggestein’s headed pass on 73 minutes, 3-1.
Bremen opened the floodgates at the back when Embolo completed his brace after heading in from close-range for a mere consolation, 3-2.
In time added on, Martin Harnik came from the bench to round off the victory for the home side with a cool finish, 4-2.
