Bayern Munich comprehensively trounced Wolfsburg 6-0 to reclaim top spot on the Bundesliga table.
Despite seeing more of the ball, Bayern struggled to infiltrate the visitors who held their defensive lines well in the earlier moments.
Wolfsburg were the first on the attack, with Yannick Gerhardt’s glancing header off Maxi Arnold’s corner going over the bar on 27 minutes.
The Bavarians soon bossed the match when Koen Casteels produced a solid save off Robert Lewandowski’s 29th minute effort.
Serge Gnabry granted the all-domineering Germans the breakthrough with a flick in from the near post on 34 minutes, 1-0.
Four minutes later Lewandowski got in on the act with a simple tap-in for the home side to make it 2-0 while Mats Hummels failed to kill off the half wide a wide-sided effort.
Bayern amended the miss when James Rodriguez took two touches to rattle the net from Thiago Alcantara’s assist on 52 minutes, 3-0.
Javi Martinez, who suffered an injury in the first half, made room for Leon Goretzka after 55 minutes, as Nikola Kovac turned focus to Wednesday’s assignment with Liverpool.
In a rare moment, Arnold received possession in the middle and produced a shot from range which Manuel Neuer saved rather easily.
Bayern weren’t done, as Rodriguez played through Thomas Muller who failed to beat Casteels after cutting inside, with Goretzka’s follow-up also denied by Casteels on 67 minutes.
Further misery struck Wolfsburg, as Muller made it four with a first-time finish on 76 minutes off Franck Ribery’s pass, 4-0.
In the 82nd minute, Joshua Kimmich ensured a five-goal blitz courtesy of a simple finish at the back post, 5-0.
Ribery provided another assist this time to Lewandowski, who sneaked ahead of the defence to head into the far corner for an astounding win.
