Schalke’s winless run stretched to four matches following a 1-1 draw against mid-table Union Berlin in the day’s other fixture in Gelsenkirchen.
Senegalese Salif Sane headlined the home side’s defence with Algerian international Nabil Bentaleb put out wide as the hunt for their first league win waged on.
Berlin had the visitors ahead just after halftime following a goalless first half, but substitute Goncalo Paciencia levelled to give Schalke their first point of the campaign.
