Bayer Leverkusen's top-four hopes suffered a blow after 2-1 defeat to Freiburg on home soil.
After the first half ended goalless, the visitors raced into the lead on 50 minutes through Ermedin Demirovic's fourth league goal of the season.
The lead was doubled 11 minutes later when Lucas Holer bagged his third of the campaign by firing past debutant Lucas Grill.
Leon Bailey did pull a goal back for Leverkusen on 70 minutes, but Freiburg were able to hold for three points on the day and move up to eighth spot while Leverkusen remain in sixth position.
