Klaassen Salvages A Point For Bremen Against Stuttgart

Bundesliga

Result: Werder Bremen 1-1 Stuttgart

Date: 22 February 2019

Venue: Weserstadion

Stuttgart's push for survival in the Bundesliga took a dent after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Werder Bremen on Friday evening.

Bremen were looking to get into the top half of the table, as they came to the game lying 10th while Stuttgart occupied the relegation/play-off spot.

The visitors took the lead as early as the first minute of the game thanks to Steven Zuber who found the back of the net with a long-range strike.

Stuttgart had the momentum and got the better chances as the half went on, but were often denied a two-goal cushion by the brilliance the Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka.

The hosts were growing in the game ten minutes in the latte stages of the half, and they managed to level matters on the stroke of halftime thanks to Davy Klaassen's long-range effort.

The visitors made their first change at the beginning of the second stanza looking as Christian Gentner replaced Marc-Oliver Kempf. Bremen also refreshed their attacking line in the 62nd minute as Claudio Pizarro came on for Joshua Sargent as the hosts pushed for a winner.

Nuri Sahin almost put the home side ahead  20 minutes before time with a left-footed strike that forced Stuttgart goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler into a fine save.

Theodor Gebre Selassie also came very close to snatching the lead for Bremen with 11 minutes remaining as his header inside the box was saved by Zieler.

Despite the late push from both sides, 1-1 was how the encounter as Stuttgart remain in 16th spot, two points adrift of safety.
