Result: Nurnberg 1-1 Schalke
Date: 12 April 2019
Nurnberg's hopes of beating the drop suffered a setback following a 1-1 draw at home to Schalke in the Bundesliga on Friday evening.
Both sides came in to the encounter desperate for three points, most notably Nurnberg who were four points adrift of safety.
It was an evenly contested affair for most of the half, although clear-cut chances were hard to come by on both ends of the pitch.
The home side had the ball in the back of the net on 43 minutes but the referee ruled out the strike without checking with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The hosts had the perfect chance to take the lead on the stroke of halftime when they awarded penalty. However, Hanno Behrens stepped up and had his spot-kick saved by Alexander Nubel.
The visitors opted for a change at the start of the second half as Amine Harit made way for former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nabil Bentaleb.
Schalke had to wait until the 73rd minute for their first opening at goal in the second stanza, with Bree Embolo firing wide from close range.
However, Nurnberg eventually broke the deadlock on 82 minutes through Yuya Kubo, who nodded home a cross from Matheus Pereira.
The hosts' joy was short-live though, as Schalke were level four minutes later with Matija Nastasic finding the back of the net with a header of his own.
In the end, neither side could carve out another clear-cut opening as the spoils were shared on the night.
