Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund failed to restore their five-point lead over Bayern Munich after dropping points away to bottom-placed Nurnberg.
The league leaders were desperate for three points as they entered encounter only two points ahead of Bayern Munich, who won on Saturday.
Dortmund dominated the opening exchanges, and they managed to carve out a couple efforts at goal as Maximilian Philipp and Thomas Delaney went close inside the opening 10 minutes.
The Bavarians pushed for the opener as the half went on as Axel Witsel went close to scoring with an effort from distance that was palmed away by Christian Mathenia on 24 minutes.
Four minutes later, Nurnberg managed to carve out a chance of their own as as Eduard Lowen's cross found Hanno Behrens, whose header was saved by Roman Burki.
The hosts ended the first half on a strong note when Matheus Pereira forced Burki into a save with a powerful effort from distance.
After a quiet start to the second half, Nurnberg managed to carve out another chance when Enrico Valentini's corner found Lukas Muhl, who headed wide on 59 minutes.
Paco Alcacer was eventually introduced moments later, and he should have opened the scoring after 75 minutes but failed to steer his header on target from close range.
Dortmund threw bodies forward in the closing stages of the second half, but they were unable to find a way past Mathenia.
As a result, Dortmund sit only three points ahead of the defending champions following the stalemate.
