Result: Borussia Monchengladbach 1-3 RB Leipzig
Date: 30 August 2019
RB Leipzig maintained their winning start to the Bundesliga after defeating Borussia Monchengladbach, with Timo Werner netting a hat-trick on Friday night.
Leipzig named a strong line-up, with Breel Embolo the only change for Borussia from their 3-1 triumph over Mainz while Oscar Wendt made a 200th league appearance.
Gladbach were seeking to end a winless run against their counterparts in the last six matches, thus exclaiming their objectives from the get-go.
The opening minutes continued favouring Gladbach, as Plea Alassane went close with a half-volley after the half-hour mark but Pete Thorgan smothered the threat.
Leipzig broke the barrel against the run of play inside the 38th minute through Werner, who finished through the legs of Jan Sommer after being sent clear.
Gladbach were pegged back further as Werner collected his double two minutes from halftime after out-sprinting the defence to beat Sommer.
Leipzig pushed for more following the 65th minute mark, but Sommer accompanied by his defensive entourage stood tall.
Laci Benese made an entry from the bench a minute later, with Marcus Thuram sacrificed as the home side’s maiden substitution. A second change from Leipzig in the last 20 minutes saw Kevin Kampl introduced for Diego Demme as a closed shop tactic.
Gladbach finally got on the scoreboard a minute into time added on through Embolo who headed in off his shoulder.
There was however no come back as Werner pulled clear once more to complete his hat-trick later on, thus taking Leipzig to the top of the table.
