Report: Bayern Munich 2-1 Borussia Monchengladbach
Date: 13 June 2020
Venue: Allianz Arena
Bayern Munich are on the brink of securing the Bundesliga title after netting a late winner against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday night.
Robert Lewandowski missed out through suspension, which saw coach Hans Flick handed a start to 19-year-old striker Joshua Zirkzee.
The visitors' plans were dealt a set-back as early as the 10th minute as the influential Marcius Thuram was forced off through injury and replaced by Bree Embolo.
Bayern were stunned on 15 minutes when Hofmann calmly lifted the ball over Manuel Neuer, but the hosts were able to breathe a sigh of relief as the goal was deemed offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
However, the hosts grabbed the lead in the 26th minute as Zirkee pounced on an error from Jan Sommer to slot home his fourth league goal of the season.
Gladbach managed to get themselves back on level terms seven minutes before the halftime break after Benjamin Pavard deflected Patrick Herrmann's ball into his own net.
The visitors came out firing in the second half as Stefan Lainer and Herrmann went close to scoring in the opening 10 minutes of the first stanza.
Bayern responded with a double change after the hour mark as Alphonso Davies and Kingsley Coman were introduced at the expense of Lucas Hernandez and Mickael Cuisance.
Pavard had the chance to make amends for his own goal five minutes later and but he directed his header over the crossbar after being left un-marked by the Gladbach defence.
With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Leon Goretzka popped up with the winning goal four minutes from the full-time whistle with a neat finish into the bottom corner.
