Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund missed the chance to move six points clear of Bayern Munich after they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Augsburg on Friday evening.
Dortmund were boosted by the return of Marco Reus after missing their 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.
Augsburg were forced to make an early substitution in the 17th minute after defender Konstantinos Stafylidis went down with injury and was replaced by Georg Teigl.
Despite the set-back, the hosts took the lead in the 24th minute through Ji Dong-Won, who fired a left-footed shot into the top corner, 1-0.
Reus came close to finding the equaliser for the visitors in the 32nd minute with a header that sailed slightly over the bar following a cross from Abdou Diallo.
Dortmund upped their pressure on the home side in the early stages of the first stanza but they were let down in the final third, which prompted Lucien Favre to introduce Paco Alcacer for Reus after the hour mark.
However, Dong-Won doubled Augsburg’s lead a minute later in similar fashion to the opening goal, although he slotted into the bottom corner to complete his brace.
Alcacer eventually pulled a goal back for the visitors eight minutes before time with a strike from close range after he was set-up by Mario Gotze.
Dortmund threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser in the closing stages of the half, but Augsburg were bale to hold on for victory to move five points clear of the drop zone.
As for the title race, Bayern can move level on points with Dortmund at the top with a win against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday evening.
