Bayern Boss Slams Ballon D'Or Cancellation, Could Ask FIFA To Help

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has slammed the decision to cancel this year's Ballon d'Or awards, and could talk to FIFA to intervene.

The Bavarians chief feels striker Robert Lewandowski had a good chance of winning the prestigious Golden Ball this year, and has expressed his dissatisfaction after organisers France Football announced that they would not hand out the famed award this year.

"I believe Robert Lewandowski is playing a fantastic season and he performed maybe the best season in his career," Rummenigge said, as quoted by ESPN.

"Unfortunately, France Football cancelled the Golden Ball which we are not very happy (with) and in the end it's not very fair, not just Bayern but also for Robert Lewandowski, who might have won."

France Football opted to cancel the awards in 2020 due to the effects of coronavirus pandemic, with many league seasons going uncompleted.

Rummenigge, though, insisted that only the French top flight was terminated, and claimed he could get FIFA involved.

"I believe it's very important that in a season that, except the French league, (the other leagues) performed through to the end of the season, it has to be possible to give the Golden Ball to the best footballer in the world and, of course, I believe, in those circumstances, Robert would have a good chance to win it in the first time in his career," he added.

"I may talk to (FIFA president) Gianni Infantino later and will try to convince him that he is convincing France Football — or that FIFA can organise a Ballon d'Or."

FIFA, though, play no part in the handing out of the Ballon d'Or, ever since they and France Football split from their previous co-operation in doing so in 2016. FIFA themselves are in charge of The Best FIFA awards, but their ceremony, which was planned for September, has also been cancelled.
