On Monday, FIFA announced the three-man shortlist for the 2017 World Goal of the Year, with Masuluke up against Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and Venezuela’s Deyna Castellanos.
The dramatic bicycle kick from the Baroka FC goalkeeper, which saw him equalise the clash with Orlando Pirates in the last minute back on 30 November 2016, is already South Africa’s fourth nomination on the Puskas Award list.
However, his predecessors Katlego Mphela (2009), Siphiwe Tshabalala (2010) and Hlompho Kekana (2016) all failed to make the final three.
In 2009, Ronaldo – then still at Manchester United – won the award for a long-range screamer against FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League.
Neymar lifted the prestigious prize for a superb solo goal for Santos in 2011, while many will remember Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s stunning bicycle kick against England that earned him the award in 2013.
Here are all previous Puskas Award winners and their goals:
2009: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)
2010: Hamit Altintop (Turkey)
2011: Neymar (Santos)
2012: Miroslav Stoch (Fenerbahce)
2013: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden)
2014: James Rodriguez (Colombia)
2015: Wendell Lira (Goianesia)
2016: Mohd Faiz Subri (Penang)
