Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have both won the award five times in the past 10 years, but their decade of dominance has been tipped by many to come to an end this year.
Two weeks ago, a reported leak of the top three made the rounds on social media following a report from a French journalist, but a new top three has now reportedly emerged.
According to Onda Cero, Luka Modric will be lifting the accolade, perhaps unsurprisingly, with Ronaldo in second place and Antoine Griezmann in at third, leaving no place FC Barcelona's Messi.
This might confuse fans who believed Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane would be among the top three – he is the only player to have won both the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup this year.
The winner of the award will be revealed on 3 December by France Football.
