The Argentine picked up a record-breaking sixth Golden Ball while longstanding rival Cristiano Ronaldo did not show up for the awards gala in Paris.
Messi has now won the prestigious accolade handed out by France Football in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019 – more than any other player in history.
He beat Virgil van Dijk, who was named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year in August, to the Ballon d'Or, with Ronaldo finishing in third spot– it is the first time since 2010 that the Juventus superstar did not end up among the top two players in the world.
Liverpool duo Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, who were both also not present at the gala, complete the top five, respectively, followed by Kylian Mbappe and Alisson Becker.
Robert Lewandowski and Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez complete the top 10 in this year's ranking.
