As captains of their national teams, Ronaldo, Messi and winner Luka Modric were asked to vote for their favourite.
For the first time in the history of their voting, Messi voted for Ronaldo, even if only in third place, while the Portugal captain once again snubbed his longstanding rival.
Instead, Ronaldo chose Raphael Varane, Modric and Antoine Griezmann as his top three, respectively, while Messi voted for Modric, Mbappe and Ronaldo. Meanwhile, 2018 The Best Men's Player of the Year Modric chose Varane, Ronaldo and Griezmann.
Meanwhile, South Africa captain Hlatshwayo selected Ronaldo, Modric and Mbappe, while Bafana boss Baxter opted for Messi, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne.

National team captains were part of four voting panels, along with national team coaches, a media representative per member association and fans, that helped decide the main prize, with each panel carrying a 25% weighting.
Each voter's first choice received five points, second choice three points and third choice one point. All points from the different voting panels were added up to together to calculate the final ranking.
