Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi claimed his seventh Ballon d'Or title in Paris on Monday night, after an incredible calendar year in which he won the 2021 Copa del Rey with Barcelona and the 2021 Copa America with Argentina.
The 34-year-old made history when he claimed his sixth Ballon d'Or in 2019, and has now extended his record over his peers and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the player who has the second-most wins of the accolade, with five.
There was disappointment for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, who was perhaps unfortunate to miss out last year when France Football cancelled the 2020 edition of the prize due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking after receiving the award, Messi said: "I don't know how many years I have left, but I hope there will still be many because I am having enormous fun."
The seven-time winner also had kind words for his rival Lewandowski, who finished in second, saying: "You deserve your Ballon D'Or. Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner."
