Gyan Refutes Ronaldo Record

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Spain on Friday, making the 2018 FIFA World Cup the ninth major tournament he has scored in, but Ghana's Asamoah Gyan has refuted the latest record widely attributed to the Portuguese.

Ronaldo's triple in Portugal's 3-3 draw with the 2010 FIFA World Cup winners took his tally to six strikes in the competition's history. He has now found the back of the net at the tournament in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018. In addition, he also scored at the UEFA European Championships in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016, as well as the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Following Ronaldo's three-goal showing, it was widely reported that he had become the first player to score in nine successive major international tournaments – eight if the Confed Cup is not considered a major tournament.

However, Ghana striker Gyan was, in fact, the first to score in nine different major showpieces, namely the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups, as well as seven Africa Cups of Nations between 2008 and 2017.

The 32-year-old, whose country failed to qualify for the tournament in Russia, has since made his feelings known via Twitter, suggesting that he does not get the credit he deserves.

To date, Gyan is still the African with the most goals in World Cup history, having netted six times in his three finals appearances.
