Liverpool superstar Sadio Mane will be hoping to win a second consecutive CAF African Player of the Year award in 2020, which would see him join an illustrious list of just nine African superstars to have taken home the prize on more than one occasion.

Last year was a remarkable one for 27-year-old Mane, whose 2016 arrival at the Reds for €41 million (R657 million) raised eyebrows. In hindsight, perhaps it is strange to imagine there ever being any doubts about the Senegalese winger, but he has come on in leaps and bounds since joining forces with Jurgen Klopp.
Mane was crowned CAF Player of the Year for 2019 after playing a huge hand in Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League success, while he was also at the forefront of his country’s run to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Having tasted success, the former Southampton man will be looking to emulate, if not, improve on what was a spectacular calendar year, and in doing so, join only nine other African superstars to have won the prestigious prize more than once.
Two players – Samuel Eto’o and Yaya Toure – were awarded the prize on four occasions in their careers, with three high-profile legends winning the accolade three times.
In that category is the only African footballer to have won a Ballon d’Or, George Weah, Ghana icon Abedi Pele, and former Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba. Four more players have been handed the prize twice, but to see who they are, click through the gallery above!
This season so far for Liverpool, Mane has scored 15 goals and created a further 11 strikes in 31 matches, with many believing the Senegalese winger is currently the Reds’ deadliest attacker.
