Ahead of the current Premier League campaign, Arsenal smashed the record for an African player when they signed Ivory Coast international Nicolas Pepe for €80 million (R1.2 billion) from Ligue 1 outfit Lille. The 24-year-old has scored five goals in 27 appearances for the Gunners since.

Prior to Pepe's arrival in North London, the record was held by Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez. The Algeria star arrived in Manchester from Leicester City for a fee of €67.8 million (R1.08 billion) and has scored 21 goals in 75 appearances for the reigning Premier League champions.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who shared the 2018/19 Premier League Golden Boot award with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, rounds out the top three after costing Arsenal €63.7 million (R1.02 billion) in January 2018.
