Eto'o Axed Over Racism Row

Former FC Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o has been axed from his Turkish club Antalyaspor's squad after he posted controversial remarks on social media about not receiving enough respect because he is black.

The Cameroon international was linked with a move to Turkish rivals Besiktas during the latest transfer window, and has not been able to repeat his brilliant form of last season so far in this campaign.

As a consequence, the 35-year-old has come in for criticism from many, and responded with a controversial Instagram post, as reported by Sky Sports.

"Reminder – perhaps some people do not feel respect for me because I am black," read part of his statement in Turkish, accompanied by an image of all the silverware he has won.

"But I am not going to come down from the level I have reached. I have been in this game for 18 years."

Eto'o also vowed to continue fighting for Antalyaspor and later posted another message insisting that his criticism was not directed at club chairman Ali Safak Ozturk, whom he called "a brother".

However, Turkish commentators have interpreted Eto'o's initial post as a response to criticism by Safak Ozturk, and the board of the club has now decided demote him from the squad until further notice.

"No player is above the interests of Antalyaspor. Everyone must know their place," a statement from the Antalyaspor board read.

Eto'o has scored 21 goals in 35 games since joining Antalyaspor in 2015, but has put away only one strike in three games this season, and his club are now 17th on the log, with one point from four games.
