On Wednesday, Liverpool lifted the Super Cup trophy after beating Premier League rivals Chelsea 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 scoreline after 120 minutes.
The result saw the Reds extend their record as England’s most successful side in the competition with four titles to their name, at least three more than any of their domestic rivals, and Sadio Mane was the club's destroyer in chief against the Blues, netting both of the reigning Uefa Champions League holders' goals on the night.
The 27-year-old equalised for the Merseyside club after Olivier Giroud had given Chelsea the lead, and then put his side ahead in extra-time, although a goal from Jorginho forced the match to go to a penalty shootout.
Mane took no part in the shootout but his goals helped Liverpool become the joint-third most successful Super Cup club of all time, behind Barcelona and AC Milan, and saw him claim a piece of history for himself too.
The Senegalese forward's brace saw him become the first African player to score in the competition since Freddie Kanoute in 2006, and the first ever from the continent to score twice in a single Super Cup match.
Mane is also one of only six players from any nation to score two or more goals in the competition in the past two decades, and one of only 17 players to have done so since the tournament's inception in the early 1970s.
The latest performance caps an incredible year for the former Southampton star, who has now won the Champions League and Super Cup trophies, reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations and shared the 2018/19 Premier League Golden Boot award.
