Ghana Receive Backlash For Controversial Call-Up Ahead Of Bafana Clash

Ghana coach Charles Akonnor has received massive backlash in his home country after the controversial call-up of Kwame Afriyie Poku, who plays in the fourth division in England.

The Black Stars included the 19-year-old in their squad to face South African in Johannesburg on 25 March, with some high-profile names set to miss out due to COVID-19 restrictions.

While the likes of captain Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew and Thomas Partey will not be facing Bafana Bafana, Colchester United midfielder Poku has remained in the Ghana squad.

There was some confusion around his name, with local reports claiming he was removed from Ghana's initial squad and instead shifted to the "B" team, who are set to take on Uzbekistan in a friendly next week.

However, the Ghana FA confirmed on Monday that Poku will be part of the travelling squad that will depart Accra on Tuesday.

According to GhanaSoccerNet, Akonnor himself did not include Poku in his list of names for the Bafana clash, but the Ghana FA added him to secure his international future.

The Black Stars also confirmed that the Ayew brothers and Partey will join up with their national teammates after their trip to South Africa and be part of the squad to face Sao Tome and Principe on 28 March in Accra.

Ghana need one point from their game against Molefi Ntseki's side to seal qualification for next year's Africa Cup of Nations.
