Yaya Toure was once again among the top five African performers this past weekend, but it was another African star who made in Whoscored’s Best XI of the game week.

Victor Wanyama [7.92]
The Kenya international’s performances for Tottenham this season have perhaps not drawn the plaudits they deserve. A £12 million (R203m) signing from Southampton, Wanyama has arguably been one of the bargains of the season. He followed up his Man of the Match display in Spurs’ North London Derby win over Arsenal with another imperious performance against Manchester United on Sunday. Playing at White Hart Lane for the final time, Wanyama was a monster in midfield for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, scoring his third league goal of the season and weighing in five tackles – the most of any player on display.
Ibrahima Mbaye [8.01]
The season might be over for Serie A side Bologna but that didn’t stop Ibrahima Mbaye from turning in his best performance of the season in a 3-1 win over relegated Pescara. The Senegal international was imperious at the back, completing eight tackles and interceptions combined, while also alleviating the danger with seven clearances for the home side. A pillar of consistency at the back, the 22-year-old was also a threat in attack, trying his luck at goal on three occasions.
Yaya Toure [8.1]
Manchester City ensured they celebrated Yaya Toure’s 34th birthday with a cake but you sense the Ivorian would have traded that in for a new contract this time around. Toure turned in another high-class performance during City’s 2-1 win over Leicester on Saturday. Toure dictated the tempo of the match from the middle of the park, completing more passes than any other player (73). Only three players average more passes per Premier League game than Toure (70.7) and it’s hard to make a case why he doesn’t deserve a new deal based on the form he is currently showing.
Khouma Babacar [8.51]
The Fiorentina striker got his 10th goal of the season in the Viola’s thrilling 3-2 win over Lazio on Saturday to keep their European hopes alive. Of players that have scored more than five Serie A goals, only the likes of Dries Mertens, Edin Dzeko, Andrea Belotti and Gonzalo Higuain require fewer minutes per goal than Khouma Babacar (one every 119.4 minutes).
Cheikh Ndoye [9.29]
The Senegal international has endured a real purple patch of form towards the end of the season for Ligue 1 side Angers and finished the weekend’s action as the best rated African player from Europe’s top six leagues. His second goal in three matches was enough to help Angers inflict Mario Balotelli’s Nice with their first home league defeat of the season. Ndoye holds the record for the most aerial duels won in a Ligue 1 game this season and he wasn’t far from matching that feat after winning 12 aerial contests against Nice. He was almost unstoppable in midfield and is deservedly the African player of the week after also finding the back of the net once.
