Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly suffered their second defeat of the Egyptian Premier League season after going down 1-0 to Ghazl El Mahalla on Monday night.
The Red Devils looked to get back on the winning trail after dropping points against El Gouna over the weekend.
The game have been coming thick and fast for the African champions as they continue to play catch up due to their involvement in the CAF Champions League.
Mosimane's charges nearly got the early goal after just four minutes but Hussein El-Shahat saw his goal-bound effort cleared away.
Despite Al Ahly's early dominance, it was the Ghazl El Mehalla who broke the deadlock on 35 minutes courtesy of Ashraf Mohamed Sayed's strike from distance.
Mosimane threw on a number of changes in the second half, including Walid Soliman and Mahmoud Walid and Walter Bowalya as they went in search of a equaliser.
However, the Red Devils were unable to find a way back into the encounter as the hosts held on for a vital three points.
Mosimane's remain in second spot but are four points behind fierce rivals Zamalek, although the defending champions still have two games in hand.
