Al Ahly endured a shaky start to the defence of their CAF Champions League title in Niger on Saturday evening.
CAF Champions League
Teams: Union Sportive de la Gendarmerie Nationale 1-1 Al Ahly
Date: 16 October 2021
Venue: Stade General Seyni Kountche
The Red Devils were without a host of big names, including South Africa international Percy Tau as well as Mohamed Magdy Afsha, Mohamed El-Shennawy, Hussien El-Shahat and Salah Mohsen.
Al Ahly are in a familiar territory after starting last season's successful campaign in Niger, where they defeated AS SONIDEP in the second round last year.
Despite some of the big names missing, Mosimane's charges got the breakthrough after being awarded a penalty in the 19th minute which Ali Maaloul converted.
The one goal was enough for the opening 45 minutes as the visitors took a slim lead into the interval after bagging an important away goal.
While the Red Devils were unable add to their advantage early in the second half, the home side managed to restore parity through Moumouni Diori's close-range finish in the 75th minute after the Ahly defence could not clear their lines.
Mosimane's were unable to restore their lead in the latter stages of the second half, but they did take an away goal ahead of the second leg in Cairo next weekend.
