With the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations around the corner, many African stars are expected to shine at the continental showpiece after writing the headlines in Europe's top leagues in the 2018/19 campaign.
As a consequence, we have picked the top African XI in Europe based on performances in Europe's top leagues as well as in European club competitions.
In goal, Ajax Amsterdam shot-stopper Andre Onana was the chosen one after helping the Dutch side to a domestic double and a brilliant run in the UEFA Champions League, which was only stopped by Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals.
On the right side of defence, Borussia Dortmund's Achraf Hakimi was picked following a great Bundesliga campaign, which has seen him being named as one of the nominees for the Rookie of the Year award.
He is joined by Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, who was named the Serie A Defender of the Season and has been heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils. Liverpool's Joel Matip completes the centre-back pairing after playing an important role in the Reds' resilient defence that saw them finish as runners-up in the Premier League and reach the Champions League final. Meanwhile, Inter Milan's Kwadwo Asamoah, who made 42 appearances for the Nerazzurri following his move from Juventus, completes the back four.
The attack-minded midfield consists of Atletico Madrid's Thomas Partey and Ajax's Hakim Ziyech in the central positions, while LOSC Lille's Nicolas Pepe and Liverpool's Sadio Mane were chosen on the wings. Pepe's 33 goal involvements in Ligue 1 helped his side to improve on last year's 17th position to second spot and qualify for Champions League football, and his fine performances reportedly put him on the radar of a host of top European clubs, including United.
With Mane, Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sharing the Premier League Golden Boot, and the Liverpool duo reaching this campaign's UCL final while the Gunners forward finished as a runner-up in the Europa League, it does not surprise that the latter pair lead our African Team of the Season's attack.
Honorable mentions go to FC Porto striker Moussa Marega, who netted 21 goals and assisted another 11 strikes across all competitions this season, as well as Galatasaray forward Mbaye Diagne. The Senegalese took the Turkish league by storm, finishing 2018/19 with 30 strikes in 29 appearances and a domestic double.
