English broadcaster the BBC have announced their 2017 BBC African Footballer of the Year, who replaces last year's winner Riyad Mahrez.

The BBC announced the five nominees for the award on 11 November, and fans could vote for their favourite on the broadcaster's website.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Victor Moses were the other four final candidates, but Mohamed Salah pipped his competition to the award.

The 25-year-old has been superb for Liverpool since joining them in July, scoring 19 goals and assisting another six strikes in 24 appearances for the Reds so far.

His remarkable Liverpool run comes on the back of top performances in Serie A last season, where he scored 19 goals and set up another 15 strike for AS Roma.

In addition, Salah was one of the star performers at the 2017 African Cup of Nations, in which Egypt reached the final, and the attacking midfielder was voted into the Team of the Tournament.

Overall, he has scored five goals for the Pharaohs in 2017, including a 95th minute penalty against Congo DR to secure Egypt's first World Cup qualification since 1990.

Salah becomes the third Egyptian to be named the BBC African Footballer of the Year, following in the footsteps of his countrymen Mohamed Barakat, who won it in 2005, and 2008 winner Mohamed Aboutrika.

Yacine Brahimi won the individual prize in 2014, while Yaya Toure won the award in 2013 and 2015, before Mahrez lifted it in 2016.

I am not comparing Salah to Messi, if you watch football and you don't check video clips you will agree when i say this guy is playing exactly like Messi. He is not a hard worker but he very talented, when he has a ball you know that any thing can happen. He doesn't not run too much, but as soon he receives the ball he runs like crazy. Look at the goal he scored during the weekend in a derby match!!! Most of those goals are score by Messi, He doesn't blast goal keepers with a ball but he only passes the net behind the goal keeper. I am a liverpool fan but I salute you Salad, I foresee him playing for Man City under Pep.

I like this boy very much. U deserve it, continue playing like that. Take on defenders and score those crucials and important goals. You have a potential of defending this award.
