Africa Cup of Nations
Result: Nigeria 1-0 Tunisia
Date: 17 July 2019
Venue: Al Salam Stadium
Odion Ighalo bagged his fifth goal of the campaign as Nigeria defeated Tunisia to secure third place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria took the lead after just three minutes. Left-back Jamilu Collins skipped past Mohammed Drager down the left-wing and squared the ball in to the box. Tunisia goalkeeper Moez Ben Cherifia and centre-back Yassine Meriah were involved in an awful mix-up with the shot-stopper parrying the cross in to the legs of Meriah with the ball bouncing loose to Odion Ighalo, who had a simple tap-in to an empty net.
In the 10th minute, Nigeria came close to grabbing their second when Ahmed Musa played in Samuel Chukwueze down the left, who squared the ball dangerously in to the box but Meriah came to the rescue as he cleared off the line.
The North Africans had their first decent attempt in the 15th minute when Wahbi Khazri played the ball in to the feet of Ferjan Sassi in the box, who curled the effort narrowly wide of the left-hand upright.
The Eagles of Catharge almost equalised two minutes after the half-time break when Firas Chaouat ran on to Khazri's through-ball but fired narrowly wide of the right-hand upright with his left foot.
Ten minutes later, Tunisia finally had their first shot on target when Anice Badri tested Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho with a sweetly struck long-range effort.
Shortly after the hour mark, the Super Eagles almost doubled their lead with a well-worked short corner that was played in to the feet of Chukwueze on the edge of the box, whose curling left-footed effort looked destined for the top right-hand corner but it was brilliantly turned around the post by Ben Cherifia.
With fifteen minutes to go, Ghailene Chaalali dragged his effort wide of the right-hand upright. The Eagles of Catharge were pressing for an equaliser and putting the Nigerians on the back foot.
However, the Super Eagles were still looking dangerous on the counter-attack and Victor Osimhen's right footed shot from the right side of the box ten minutes from time was tipped around the post by Ben Cherifia after he was assisted by Peter Etebo following a fast break.
In the 90th minute, Nigeria won a free-kick on the edge of the box when Rami Bedoui fouled Osimhen. Samuel Kalu curled the set-piece towards the top corner which brought a fine save out Ben Cherifiah, who pulled off another save to deny Kalu minutes later as the encounter finished 1-0 in favour of Nigeria.
