For the first time in the tournament's history, the annual continental showpiece is being held during the European summer.

This means that African stars such as Mohammed Salah (Egypt), Riyad Mahrez (Algeria) and Sadio Mane (Senegal), who ply their trade for European clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City will not be at risk of missing a portion of their clubs showing in their respective leagues.

Despite all 24 teams having booked their spots for the competition which gets underway on 21 June and ends on 19 July, there will be a number of notable exclusions at the tournament which takes place in Egypt.

As a consequence, we had a look at a strong line-up of player poised to miss the tournament, due to being injured, omitted from their squads or due to their nations' failure to qualify for the spectacle.

Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Khune, was selected for South Africa in their last three AFCON tournaments (2008, 2013 and 2015), but did not play a single minute in the 2008 edition of AFCON, with Rowen Fernandez being preferred to him.

The 31-year-old, who is the third most-capped player in Bafana history with 91 appearances under his belt, is set to miss the 2019 AFCON tournament, due a shoulder injury which has kept him sidelined since January.

The centre-back pairing consists of Manchester United defender Eric Baily and South Africa's Rivaldo Coetzee. The former will miss AFCON due to a long-term injury, while the latter was initially selected for Stuart Baxter's provisional 30-man squad, but withdrew, after he went home to attend to his ill mother.

Ghanaian duo Daniel Amartey and Jeffrey Schlupp complete the back-four and will not play any part in the Black Stars' campaign after being snubbed from team selection by coach James Kwesi Appiah.

A four-man midfield is made up of Zimbabwe international Willard Katsande, veteran Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari, Egyptian dribbling wizzard Ramadan Sobhi and French-based winger Keagan Dolly. While Katsande, Muntari and Sobhi were not called up into their respective squads, Dolly misses the tournament due to injury.

The two strikers selected are Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Leicester City star Kelechi Ihenacho. Former African Footballer of the Year Aubameyang will not feature at this year's tournament after Gabon were eliminated at the hands of Burundi during the qualifiers, while former Manchester City striker Ihenacho was snubbed for selection by Nigeria coach Gerot Rohr.
