Africa Cup of Nations final

Teams: Algerica vs Senegal

Date: 19 July

Time: 21:00

Venue: Cairo International Stadium

The two finalists actually met in the group stages when a solitary strike by Youcef Belaili decided the tie in favour of the Desert Foxes. The 1-0 defeat was Senegal’s only loss at the tournament, while Algeria are still unbeaten.

The team of coach Djamel Belmadi won all of their group stage games before beating Guinea 3-0 in the last 16 and the Ivory Coast on penalties in the quarter-final. They needed a last-minute free-kick by Riyad Mahrez to move past Nigeria in the semi-final to book their first final appearance in 29 years.

The Indomitable Lions, meanwhile, won two of their group stage games followed by two 1-0 wins over Uganda and Benin. In the semi-final they had to go into extra-time to beat Tunisia by the same score-line.

Senegal qualified for only their second final after 2002 when they lost on penalties to Cameroon, with current coach Aliou Cisse missing the deciding spot-kick. As a consequence, Cisse’s side are yet to lift an Afcon trophy, while Algeria won the tournament in 1990, beating Nigeria 1-0 – getting revenge for their 3-0 defeat in the 1980 final.

Sadio Mane has been Senegal’s best goalscorer, netting three times so far, but the Liverpool superstar has also missed two penalties already. Mahrez and Adam Ounas on Algeria’s side have also scored three goals in the tournament.

Senegal will miss centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, who picked a suspension in the semi-final. Algeria are unbeaten against Senegal since 2008 and lead the overall head-to-head record with 13 wins, while losing just four, with another five ties ending in a draw.
